A new era begins at Chelsea, and with it, a fresh set of challenges for manager Liam Rosenior. In a bold move, Rosenior has pledged to address the delicate situation of Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi, two players currently on the club's transfer list.
The 41-year-old Englishman, who stepped into the role after Enzo Maresca's departure, has his work cut out for him. With a long list of tasks, Rosenior must navigate the complexities of managing a squad in transition.
One of his immediate priorities is to engage with Sterling and Disasi, who joined Chelsea during the 2023-24 season for significant fees but have since found themselves training separately from the main squad. Both players turned down loan moves over the summer, leaving them in a state of limbo.
When asked about his plans, Rosenior emphasized the importance of open communication: "I will have conversations with them. It's January, and we need to assess the situation. Raheem's career speaks for itself, and I have immense respect for him. Axel is also a player I've admired for a long time."
However, the path forward is not without its obstacles. Chelsea currently has a maximum of six players on overseas loans, per FIFA's regulations, and accommodating Sterling and Disasi on temporary deals would require canceling one of those existing loans.
But here's where it gets controversial: Rosenior's voice now carries weight in these discussions. The club's strategy, usually active in every transfer window, has been somewhat subdued in January following the managerial change. Insiders suggest that Rosenior's input will be crucial, especially after Maresca's departure, which was the result of a falling out with the club's hierarchy.
When it comes to potential signings, Rosenior seems to favor an internal approach: "The first conversation I had with the club's leadership was about assessing the players we have here. Often, the best surprises come from within. I had some excellent surprises in our game against Charlton. While we want short-term success, I believe the answers might already be within our building."
And this is the part most people miss: Chelsea is expected to make significant signings in the summer, when their preferred targets are more likely to be available. The club is actively scouting high-quality attackers, as evidenced by their brief pursuit of Antoine Semenyo before he joined Manchester City. Chelsea has also considered moves for Dean Huijsen and is looking to strengthen their defense.
Among their potential targets are Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet and Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz. However, Chelsea is also linked with Djylian N'Guessan of St Etienne, although he is also a target for their sister club, Strasbourg.
The club is also known to admire Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United, especially with his contract at Old Trafford nearing its end. With Romeo Lavia struggling with injuries, Chelsea might consider options in midfield as well.
Additionally, academy graduate Tyrique George, who failed to secure a move to Fulham in the summer, is available for sale, and the club is open to loan options for him.
Chelsea remains under substantial restrictions from UEFA in January, aiming to maintain a "positive transfer balance." However, these restrictions will ease next season, coinciding with the Premier League's introduction of new Squad Cost Control ratio rules, which are less stringent than the current Profit and Sustainability regulations.
Despite the challenges, Chelsea has already lined up a host of players for the upcoming season, including Sporting winger Geovany Quenda, Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, Kairat forward Dastan Satapayev, and Corinthians left-back Denner Evangelista. The Blues have also recently completed a deal to sign defender Deinner Ordonez from Independiente del Valle, who will join in January 2028.
Other players currently on loan, such as Aaron Anselmino at Borussia Dortmund and the Strasbourg trio of Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez, are highly regarded and have previously played under Rosenior in France.
